Species: Psorophora signipennis

Importance:

Adults feed on livestock and man. It is relatively rare in Montana and of minor importance.

Biology:

This species occurs from the plains of southern Canada to Mexico. This species is adapted to arid conditions of the plains and larvae are found in small transient rain pools exposed to full sun. Development can be very rapid, with many larvae pupating on the fifth day.

Identifying Characteristics:

Pointed abdomen, pale banding on basal ends of hindtarsomeres, wing fringe with alternating spots of dark and pale scales.
