Species: Aedes niphadopsis

Importance:

This species has only been collected in Wheatland County near Lavina. It can be a vicious biter and will persistently attack man and other animals. It is not numerous enough in Montana to be an important pest.

Biology:

Larvae appear early in the spring with adults emerging in April/May. There is one generation per year and it overwinters in the egg stage.

Identifying Characteristics:

Pointed abdomen, no leg banding, wing with pale and dark scales intermixed, palpi and proboscis with some pale scales, abdominal terga with pale scales apically and basally - often forming longitudinal stripe.
