Species: Aedes communis

Importance:

This is a common mosquito at elevations above 5,000 ft. and can be a serious biter. It has been reported to be a major pest species in Yellowstone National Park.

Biology:

Ae. communis is a true snowpool species.  It overwinters in the egg stage. Larvae of this species can be found in ground depressions in mountain meadows and forests, and roadside ditches. There is one generation per year. Adults remain near larval habitats and in wooded area during the day time.

Identifying Characteristics:

Pointed abdomen, no leg banding, wing with pale scales at base, area under spiracle without scales, banding on abdominal terga, scutum with dark median longitudinal stripe, a few scutellar setae brown or black. Similar to Ae. sticticus.
